WSU researchers based out of Puyallup are studying the effects of toxic stormwater runoff on salmon in the Puget Sound region and the ability of Low Impact Development stormwater management techniques to remove pollutants from stormwater before it enters marine waters like Birch Bay. A recent study found that stormwater runoff from highways is highly toxic to fish and that using bioretention techniques like rain gardens and bioswales can effectively remove pollution and protect water quality.
